Vol. 464 No. 1

Written Answers. - Organisation of Working Time.

Máirín Quill

Ceist:

29 Miss Quill asked the Minister for Enterprise and Employment the proposed legislation which will give effect to the EU Directive on the Organisation of Working Time; and the measures, if any, aimed at dealing with the issues of Sunday trading and zero hour contracts. [7655/96]

Draft legislation to implement the provisions of Council Directive 93/104/EC covering certain aspects of the organisation of working time, which is at present in the course of preparation, will deal with weekly rest, daily rest, rest intervals at work and weekly working hours for most employees.

The new legislation will address the issue of Sunday working. Sunday is a traditional day of rest and it is the intention that those who are required to work on a Sunday are compensated in line with acceptable standards.

Recent industrial disputes have shown that the issue of zero hour contracts is not satisfactorily addressed in existing legislation. It is the intention that the working time Bill will afford some protection to such employees and others by requiring employers to provide employees with advance notice of rostering arrangements.
