59 Miss M. Wallace asked the Minister for Health the amount of money allocated in each of the last ten years for the training of sign language interpreters. [7701/96]

, Limerick East): Services for the deaf are provided by health boards and by a number of voluntary organisations which they grant aid. These organisations are involved, inter alia, in the training of interpreters and the provision of interpretation services. The National Rehabilitation Board has also contributed to the funding of training for existing interpreters. It is not possible to identify separately the element associated with interpreter training. However, between 1992 and 1994, £191,831 was provided from the EU Horizon fund for a special training course to train nine sign language interpreters at university level.
