Vol. 464 No. 1

Written Answers. - Allocation of Course Places.

Mary Wallace

Ceist:

78 Miss M. Wallace asked the Minister for Education her views on whether the allocation of places on Higher Diploma in Education courses by means of random selection is appropriate in ensuring that the limited places available are allocated to the best candidates; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [7689/96]

The position is that the college authorities reserve the right to select the students they admit to any course.

I understand that in selecting students for the higher diploma in education course the colleges have regard, in the first instance, to specific criteria such as academic attainments, the appropriateness of a students's degree subjects, relevant teaching experience and the quality of a student's application.

I also understand that some of the colleges allocate a proportion of their places to suitably qualified candidates on the basis of random selection.
