Vol. 464 No. 3

Written Answers. - Recognition of Karate.

Declan Bree

Ceist:

94 Mr. Bree asked the Minister for Education whether an application has been made to her Department and Cospóir to have the national body representing all persons involved in the sport of karate formally recognised by her Department and Cospóir; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [8119/96]

In 1993 the former Minister for Sport, following a recommendation from Cospóir, the National Sports Council, granted provisional recognition without funding to the Official National Amateur Karate Association of Ireland (ONAKAI) as a national governing body of sport for a period of one year. As the organisation failed to comply with the conditions pertaining to recognition as set out by my Department, this period was not extended.

The question of recognition for organisations representing karate and the martial arts in general will be reviewed by the new National Sports Council, which will be established shortly.
