Vol. 464 No. 5

Written Answers. - Grant Schemes.

Trevor Sargent

Ceist:

56 Mr. Sargent asked the Minister for Finance the number and the nature of the various grant schemes which he has approved in respect of his Department and its subordinate agencies; the schedule for these schemes; the objective of each such scheme; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [7932/96]

Neither my Department nor any of the agencies under the aegis of my Department, with the exception of the Office of Public Works, operate any grant schemes. I have approved a number of grant schemes operated by the Office of Public Works to alleviate difficulties arising as a result of the severe flooding in 1995. The schemes in question are as follows:

The Government humanitarian assistance: home relocation scheme made pursuant to the Commissioners of Public Works (Functions and Powers) Act, 1996. The scheme, in respect of which £750,000 was made available, is to enable the victims of the flooding who were rendered effectively homeless relocate their homes. This scheme will remain open until 1 June 1998.

A grant of £750,000 was made available by way of humanitarian aid to assist those throughout the country who, as a result of the flooding, suffered hardship. All of that grant, which was disbursed through the Irish Red Cross Society on strict humanitarian criteria, was expended in 1995.
A grant of £250,000 to assist a group of landowners in the Kiltiernan-Ballindereen area of south Galway to undertake a localised flood relief scheme to alleviate the problem in their area.
