Vol. 464 No. 7

Written Answers. - Psychiatric Services Review.

Máire Geoghegan-Quinn

Ceist:

27 Mrs. Geoghegan-Quinn asked the Minister for Health the reviews, if any, of psychiatric services in the Mid-Western Health Board which have taken place following a trial (details supplied); and if he will make a statement on the matter. [8806/96]

, Limerick East): Following the announcement of the verdict in the trial referred to by the Deputy and having regard to the evidence presented at the trial, which included concern regarding the adequacy or otherwise of the treatment provided to the accused by the mental health services, I have requested the Inspector of Mental Hospitals, Dr. Dermot Walsh, to prepare a report on his past history of contact with the services. Dr. Walsh has initiated his inquiries and I hope he will be in a position to present a report to me shortly.

In the circumstances, I do not consider it necessary or appropriate to undertake a review of the services of any of the health boards, including the Mid-Western Health Board with which the individual in question had been in contact.
