Vol. 464 No. 7

Written Answers. - EU Health Identity Cards.

Ivor Callely

Ceist:

60 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Health when the new EU health identity cards will be made available to Irish citizens; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [8815/96]

, Limerick East): The EU electronic medical record card is about to be piloted in ten EU regions — in nine member states — one of which is within the Eastern Health Board area. The project is being launched in the Eastern Health Board on 2 May 1996 and it is intended that the card will include access to the eligibility of persons for healthcare services under EU regulations, which are currently provided by way of possession of the appropriate “E” liaison form, primarily the E111 form.

Because it is a pilot project covering specific regions within nine member states there are no plans, at present, to make the card available to all Irish citizens. Entitlement to health services under EU regulations will continue to be provided to most Irish persons primarily through the issue of the appropriate "E" liaison form by the person's local health board office.
