Vol. 464 No. 8

Written Answers. - Second Commission on the Status of Women Report.

Kathleen Lynch

Ceist:

17 Kathleen Lynch asked the Minister for Equality and Law Reform the number of recommendations in the report of the Second Commission on the Status of Women which have not been implemented; if he will give a timeframe for their implementation; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [8916/96]

The report of the Second Commission on the Status of Women contains over 600 recommendations and parts of recommendations. The Deputy will be aware that the recently published second progress report on the implementation of these recommendations stated that almost 47 per cent of the recommendations have been implemented with a further 34 per cent in the process of being implemented. The remainder are not yet implemented, are under consideration or have been rejected. Implementation of some of the recommendations does not appear to be possible under the Constitution. The Deputy may wish to put down a question to the appropriate Minister about unimplemented recommendations including, where relevant, the timescale for implementation. The position regarding recommendations relevant to my Department is set out in the table which I propose to circulate in the Official Report.

Some of the recommendations are not addressed to Government, but to women's organisations, social partners, churches, etc. These recommendations have been brought to the attention of the appropriate bodies by my Department.

Recommendations relevant to Department of Equality and Law Reform which are not/will not be implemented. It is not possible to give a timeframe for all recommendations at this stage.
