Vol. 464 No. 8

Written Answers. - County Galway School Projects.

Noel Treacy

Ceist:

48 Mr. N. Treacy asked the Minister for Education the reason a project at a school (details supplied) in County Galway has not been sanctioned; if her attention has been drawn to the discriminatory way this school has been treated; if her attention has further been drawn to the deplorable condition in which both teachers and pupils have to operate; if she will sanction the STIA document in respect of this school; when sanction will be granted for these improvements; the amount allocated for these school improvements in 1996; when refurbishment will commence; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [8930/96]

An application for funding towards refurbishment works at the school in question has been submitted to my Department by County Galway Vocational Education Committee. This application is currently being considered by officials in the planning and building unit of my Department who will contact County Galway Vocational Education Committee when a decision has been made on the application.

It is not correct to state that this school has been treated in a discriminatory way. My Department has recently approved funding towards replacement windows at the school.

The document STIA is, in fact, an application form for temporary accommodation. There is no record of a recent application on file from County Galway Vocational Education Committee for the provision of additional temporary accommodation at this school. On receipt of such a request my Department will forward the relevant STIA Form to the committee.

Ceist:

49 Mr. N. Treacy asked the Minister for Education the reason a project (details supplied) in County Galway has not been sanctioned; the reason for the delay; when sanction will be granted; the amount of money allocated in respect of this project in 1996; the details of the extension to be sanctioned; when work will commence; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [8931/96]

My Department is currently addressing the accommodation requirements of the school in question.

Officials from the building unit of my Department are in correspondence with County Galway Vocational Education Committee at present regarding the provision of additional temporary accommodation to cater for the immediate needs of the school.
My Department is also awaiting submission of a completed educational worksheet in order to address the long-term accommodation requirements.
In the circumstances, I am not in a position at this stage to supply the details sought by the Deputy.
