52 Mr. J. Walsh asked the Minister for Social Welfare the total number of long-term unemployed on 1 May 1995 and 1 May 1996. [9989/96]

Statistics on the number of unemployed people are compiled by the Central Statistics Office. An analysis by unemployment duration is compiled twice each year in respect of a date in April and a date in October.

The following table sets out the number of persons on the live register for various durations of continuous registration in October 1994, April 1995 and October 1995. The equivalent figures for April 1996, with April 1995 provided also, will be published by the Central Statistics Office in June.
