Vol. 465 No. 5

Written Answers. - Disqualification from Unemployment Allowances.

Tony Gregory

Ceist:

53 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for Social Welfare the number of persons disqualified from unemployment allowances for each of the years from 1991 to 1995 in view of loss of employment through misconduct, not being available or genuinely seeking work or, no substantial loss of employment. [9997/96]

Comprehensive statistics are not maintained of the grounds on which claims to unemployment payments are disallowed. Some appreciation of the frequency of certain disallowances can be obtained from the following statistics collected on the various types of appeal by the Social Welfare appeals office. However, not all disallowances are appealed and these figures cannot be taken as a full account of the situation.

An analysis of the 1,224 unemployment appeals, excluding means appeals, determined by appeals officers during 1995 shows that the issues arising were comprised of the following categories:

Disqualification because of loss of employment through misconduct, etc.
