Vol. 465 No. 5

Written Answers. - Public Observatory Construction.

Seamus Brennan

Ceist:

61 Mr. S. Brennan asked the Minister for Enterprise and Employment whether he has received an application for grant aid towards building a public observatory; if so, when he will decide on this application; his views on whether such a project would be of value in promoting interest in science and technology; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [10001/96]

I have received a request from Astronomy Ireland to help meet the cost of a public observatory. According to the promoters, they have acquired a building to house the observatory, but require some assistance with the cost of materials, a suitable telescope and related services. This request is one of a number of such proposals which the promoters believe will improve public awareness of science and technology. I have also from time to time received requests for support for substantial proposals of a capital or infrastructural nature and have had to make it clear that I am not in a position to offer financial assistance.

I am on record as stating that a poor perception of science and technology issues, particularly among decision makers in the public and private sectors, is a fundamental weakness in the Irish science and technology system. I have asked Forfás to prepare proposals for a dedicated campaign to improve the perception of science and technology and a variety of specific actions are under consideration in that regard. I have asked Forfás to examine the proposal from Astronomy Ireland in that light.

Other similar ventures have also sought public funding support through the programmes of other Departments and this aspect has also to be taken into consideration.
