Vol. 465 No. 7

Written Answers. - Taxi Drivers' Entitlements.

Peadar Clohessy

Ceist:

22 Mr. Clohessy asked the Minister for Social Welfare whether taxi drivers and hackneys working three days a week will continue to receive social welfare payments in respect of the days they do not work; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [9434/96]

Self-employed persons such as taxi drivers and hackneys may claim means-tested unemployment assistance. Such persons are not required to sign-off the live register on any day they engage in self-employment. Means from self-employment are determined by deducting from gross income, expenses necessarily incurred in earning that income. The net income received during the year preceding the date of claim may be taken provided the deciding officer is satisfied that similar opportunities for self-employment will arise in the coming year.
