Vol. 465 No. 7

Written Answers. - Television Licence Exemption.

Noel Treacy

Ceist:

63 Mr. N. Treacy asked the Minister for Arts, Culture and the Gaeltacht if he will exempt a school (details supplied) in County Galway from having to purchase a television licence in view of the fact that this television is only used as an educational aid; if so, when this exemption will be granted; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [10632/96]

I refer the Deputy to my reply to a similar question on 28 June 1994, in colunms 940 to 941 of the Official Report.

The current statutory regime under the Wireless Telegraphy Acts, 1926 to 1988, places a universal requirement on all persons in possession of a television set to hold a current television licence. The revenue generated from the sale of television licences is paid, net of collection cost, to RTE for the general purposes of broadcasting.
