Vol. 465 No. 7

Written Answers. - Louth School Staffing.

Dermot Ahern

Ceist:

78 Mr. D. Ahern asked the Minister for Education if her attention has been drawn to the difficulties being experienced by a school (details supplied) in County Louth in relation to the staffing allocation for the school year 1996-97; if her attention has been further drawn to the fact that this school will lose a teacher; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [10503/96]

The staffing of a national school for a particular year is determined by the enrolment of the school on 30 September of the previous year. The current staffing at the school referred to by the Deputy consists of a principal, nine assistants, a concessionary teacher on account of the disadvantaged status of the school and a remedial teacher.

This staffing will not be retained for the 1996-97 school year as the enrolment of the school has declined from 281 pupils in September 1994 to 259 pupils in September 1995. The ninth assistant's post will be suppressed at the end of the current school year. The teacher in question has been given the option of having her name placed on the diocesan panel for redeployment, which will not take place before 1 September 1996.
