Vol. 465 No. 7

Written Answers. - Wheelchair Users.

Mary Wallace

Ceist:

84 Miss M. Wallace asked the Minister for Education if her attention has been drawn to cases where children who require the use of wheelchairs are being refused admission to mainstream schools in view of their disabilities; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [10573/96]

I am not aware of any situation where a wheelchair-bound child has been refused admission to a school because of his-her disability.

It is a matter for the board of management to set an enrolment policy for each school. My Department will carry out an investigation where it is claimed that a board is operating its enrolment policy in a manner which discriminates against a particular child.

Should my Department be supplied with details of any school where a child has been refused admission, my officials will be pleased to pursue the matter with the relevant board of management as a matter of urgency.
