Vol. 466 No. 2

Written Answers. - County Wicklow Garda Data.

Mildred Fox

Ceist:

113 Ms M. Fox asked the Minister for Justice the number of Garda stations that have been permanently closed in the past five years in County Wicklow; the number that have been changed to the green man system; her views on the effectiveness of this system; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [11192/96]

Contrary to public perception no Garda stations have been closed in Wicklow or elsewhere, as a result of the community policing scheme for rural areas. The "Green Man" system is in place in 13 Garda stations in the county and operates when these stations are unmanned.

I refer the Deputy to my reply to Parliamentary Question No. 153 on Wednesday, 15 May 1996 for my views in relation to the scheme.

Ceist:

114 Ms M. Fox asked the Minister for Justice the number of gardaí that will be assigned to the Kilcoole area of County Wicklow to facilitate the Irish Open at Druids Glen Golf Club; whether these gardaí will be taken from Garda stations in County Wicklow; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [11193/96]

The detailed allocation of Garda personnel and resources to individual areas is a matter for the Garda authorities. They have informed me that the policing arrangements for the Kilcoole area during the Murphy's Irish Open golf tournament at Druids Glen Golf Club are currently being made and are under the control of the Assistant Commissioner in charge of the Dublin Metropolitan Area. While a decision on the number of gardaí to be employed in the Kilcoole area during this event has not yet been finalised I understand that it is anticipated that Garda personnel will be drawn from the Wexford division and the Dublin Metropolitan Area.
