Ivor Callely

Ceist:

119 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Social Welfare the total cost of all travel undertaken by civil servants in his Department in 1995; his policy in relation to such travel; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [11150/96]

It is proposed to take Questions Nos. 118 and 119 together.

The total cost of all travel and subsistence in Ireland and abroad undertaken by civil servants in my Department in 1995, net of EU refunds, amounted to £2,543,124.

The total cost of business class travel abroad by civil servants in 1995 amounted to £99,468, of which £36,270 was refundable by the EU.

Of the total figure of £99,468 for business class travel, £41,809 was incurred in connection with international consultancy work on behalf of the EU and World Bank undertaken by officers of the Department, the cost of which was recovered from the fees earned. Therefore the net cost of business class travel abroad was £21,389.

The business class destinations covered were as follows: Brussels, Strasbourg, Luxembourg, Paris, Copenhagen, Lisbon, Helsinki, London, Manchester, Newcastle, Amsterdam, Munich, Athens, Florence, Vienna, Vilnius, Warsaw and Tirana.

It is the Department's general policy to ensure that only such travel as is necessary for the efficient discharge of the Department's responsibilities is undertaken. In the case of air travel, business class is used where flexibility and interchangeability of flights are required. Lower cost flights are used where flexibility is not a factor and where worthwhile savings would result.
