Vol. 466 No. 2

Written Answers. - Travel Costs.

Ivor Callely

Ceist:

135 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Transport, Energy and Communications the total cost of business class travel incurred by civil servants in his Department in 1995; the destinations to which officials travelled; and his policy on the use of business class travel. [11140/96]

The information required by the Deputy is contained in the following table. All officers are encouraged to use the most cost effective means of travel available.

Considerations such as flexibility in travel arrangements and reducing staff time away from the office are among the important factors considered when deciding upon the choice of travel arrangements.

Ivor Callely

Ceist:

136 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Transport, Energy and Communications the total cost of all travel undertaken by civil servants in his Department in 1995; his policy in relation to such travel; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [11154/96]

The total cost in my Department of all travel undertaken in 1995 amounted to £728,000. This includes the cost of foreign travel by the Minister and Minister of State which has already been addressed in a written reply to the Deputy on 21 May 1996. My policy in relation to official travel is that it is only undertaken where it is absolutely necessary.
