Vol. 466 No. 2

Written Answers. - New Entrants to Fishing Industry.

John Browne

Ceist:

46 Mr. Browne (Wexford) asked the Minister for the Marine the plans, if any, his Department is making for new entrants into the fishing industry, particularly young fishermen; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [11053/96]

I have asked the Department to review from all relevant perspectives the future directions of fleet policy, including the relative socio-economic and commercial merits of the introduction of new and more modern vessels into the fleet. The scope for additional measures to encourage new entrants into the fishing industry will also be assessed as part of the review.

The review will give full consideration to all the relevant factors, including the economics of realising available fishing opportunities, the training needs of young fishermen, ongoing EU fleet policy to address the overcapacity problem in the EU fleet overall and the outcome of the Review Group on Fishing Vessels Safety.
