Ivor Callely

Ceist:

58 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Finance the total cost of all travel undertaken by civil servants in his Department in 1995; his policy in relation to such travel; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [11145/96]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 57 and 58 together.

The total net amount paid in respect of domestic and overseas travel, subsistence and miscellaneous costs associated with such travel undertaken by officials of my Department was £271,930.19, of which £64,769.24 is accounted for by business class air travel.

The destinations to which officials travelled most frequently were Brussels, London, Luxembourg and Paris. Other destinations visited included Amsterdam, Beijing, Cannes, Copenhagen, Frankfurt, Geneva, Madrid, Nancy, Nice, Ottawa, Seville, Strasbourg, Stockholm, Toronto, United Kingdom, various locations, Washington and Zurich.

The Department has a policy of encouraging officials to seek out the method of travelling which offers the best value for money and tries to ensure that only such travel is undertaken as is consistent with the efficient discharge of official duty. Business class travel is used where the necessary flexibility which this mode of travel provides is required.
