Vol. 466 No. 4

Written Answers. - Oil Storage Tanks.

Seán Haughey

Ceist:

144 Mr. Haughey asked the Minister for the Environment his views on whether the use of plastic oil storage tanks in or adjacent to indoor public venues are a fire hazard; the studies, if any, that have been presented to his Department in this regard; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [11651/96]

Under the Fire Services Act 1981, it is the duty of persons having control over such venues to take measures to guard against the outbreak of fire and to ensure the safety of persons on the premises in the event of fire. Fire authorities have powers under the Act to require that appropriate fire safety measures be taken.

While the formulation of such standards would come under the aegis of the Department of Enterprise and Employment, I understand that there is no Irish (or British) standard in regard to plastic oil storage tanks. I understand, also, that the European Standards Organisation (CEN) is currently preparing a standard in respect of such tanks, including their installation.
