Vol. 466 No. 4

Written Answers. - Special Facilities for Student.

Michael P. Kitt

Ceist:

175 Mr. M. Kitt asked the Minister for Education whether she has received an application for a school care assistant in respect of a student to attend a school (details supplied) in County Galway; if so, whether sanction will be given for a computer in respect of this student; the funding, if any, that will be made available in respect of other changes required in the school, such as ramps and easier access to the playground; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [11465/96]

My Department has received an application on behalf of the student in question seeking a classroom assistant, computer equipment and funding to make the school more accessible. I am not in a position at present to make child care assistant posts available to primary schools.

I have asked my Department's inspectorate to investigate the special equipment needs of the child. A report from the inspectorate is currently awaited and will be considered in the context of available resources. With regard to the question of access to the school, a report is awaited from my Department's professional advisers. On receipt of their recommendations, my Department will be in touch with the school management with a view to putting the necessary arrangements in place.
