A fundamental principle of the secondary schools building grants scheme is that works qualifying for grant assistance must have the prior written approval of my Department before construction commences. The position is that the school referred to by the Deputy embarked on a significant building programme including the provision of two lecture rooms, staff accommodation and changing area without the knowledge or approval of my Department. In the circumstances my Department cannot accede to a request for funding.
