Vol. 466 No. 4

Written Answers. - Unemployed Teachers.

Micheál Martin

Ceist:

193 Mr. Martin asked the Minister for Education the steps, if any, she has taken to assist unemployed teachers who have not secured teaching employment for some time. [11646/96]

To assist primary teachers secure permanent employment, I have this year concluded an agreement with the education partners which will allow temporary teachers who have completed a minimum of three years' temporary service to gain access to redeployment panels. Permanent teaching vacancies must be filled, in the first instance, from these panels. This measure will prove to be of immense value to teachers seeking permanent employment.

At second-level, the number of teaching posts has increased steadily over the past number of years due to increased enrolments and the introduction of new programmes. In addition, further vacancies have arisen as a result of the allocation of additional remedial, guidance, home schools links, resource and special vice-principal posts. The expansion of the job-sharing scheme has also contributed to the number of posts available for unemployed teachers.
