Vol. 466 No. 4

Written Answers. - Allocation of Garda Personnel.

Eamon Walsh

Ceist:

232 Mr. E. Walsh asked the Minister for Justice the plans, if any, she has to increase the Garda strength in the Dublin South-West constituency, particularly in Tallaght, Dublin 24 in view of the increase in population and business premises in the constituency; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [11685/96]

The allocation of Garda personnel is the responsibility of the Garda authorities.

They have informed me that the current Garda strength attached to Tallaght Garda Station is 137 members. This is an increase of 23 members since 1994.

The Garda authorities are in regular contact with the business community in Tallaght and they have informed me that the establishment of a business watch scheme in the greater Tallaght area is currently being initiated. It is hoped that this scheme will be up and running in the very near future.

I am also informed by the Garda authorities that foot and mobile patrols, both uniform and plain clothes, are regularly carried out in the Tallaght area, particularly in the industrial estates. These patrols are augmented, where necessary, by the drugs unit based in Tallaght and by the Divisional Task Force based in Crumlin. The Tallaght area is also patrolled by the community policing unit based at Tallaght and they regularly liaise with the local business community.
I am assured by the Garda authorities that the deployment of personnel within the Tallaght area is being kept under continual review and adjustments will be made as necessary.
