Vol. 466 No. 4

Written Answers. - Commercial Saw Milling Operations.

Robert Molloy

Ceist:

252 Mr. Molloy asked the Minister for Enterprise and Employment the current Government policy in relation to grant-aiding the establishment or extension of commercial saw milling operations; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [11476/96]

I refer the Deputy to my reply to Question No. 122 on 28 March 1996 indicating that it has been policy since 1991 not to grant-aid any further capacity in the sector. The only significant support continuing to be available from Forbairt relates to added value activities through "Measure 1" grants.

As regards the Deputy's earlier reference to Údarás na Gaeltachta, my colleague, the Minister for Arts, Culture and the Gaeltacht, Deputy Michael D. Higgins, under whose aegis Údarás operates, has advised that it is the policy of Údarás na Gaeltachta to have due regard to national policy regarding sensitive or designated sectors such as the timber industry and that no further grant aid is proposed for the enterprise to which the Deputy's earlier question adverted.
