Vol. 466 No. 5

Written Answers. - Traffic Calming Measures.

Eamon Walsh

Ceist:

101 Mr. E. Walsh asked the Minister for the Environment the traffic calming measures which may be used by South Dublin County Council to improve the urban residential environment; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [11816/96]

Section 38 of the Road Traffic Act, 1994, provides that road authorities may, in the interests of the safety and convenience of road users, provide such traffic calming measures as they consider desirable for public roads in their charge. Guidance notes on the implementation of these provisions were issued by my Department to road authorities in 1994. These included references to appropriate traffic calming publications, both local and international, outlining measures for urban, residential and rural areas.

Ceist:

102 Mr. E. Walsh asked the Minister for the Environment the traffic calming measures supported by his Department and applied for by South Dublin County Council; the amount of finance in this respect; the location of the projects; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [11817/96]

A scheme of grants for traffic management measures forming part of the recommended strategy outlined in the final report of the Dublin Transportation Initiative was introduced in 1994.

Traffic calming measures are eligible for assistance under this scheme. Grants have since been paid to South Dublin County Council in respect of the following traffic calming projects:

1. Rathfarnham Village

1994

£100,000

1995

£46,700

2. Clondalkin Village

1995

£99,558

3. St. James's Road

1995

£89,000

In February this year, I devolved the administration of this grants scheme to the Dublin transportation office.
Subject to the foregoing, the cost of traffic calming measures on non-national roads is met from the local authorities' own resources, supplemented by the annual discretionary grants from my Department. The payment of grants in respect of traffic calming measures on national roads is a matter for the National Roads Authority.
