Vol. 466 No. 5

Written Answers. - Funding for Roads.

Eamon Walsh

Ceist:

103 Mr. E. Walsh asked the Minister for the Environment the finances allocated for road building, maintenance and improvements in the area under the responsibility of South Dublin County Council for non-national roads for each of the years from 1992 to 1996; the names of the roads involved; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [11818/96]

Details of non-national road grant payments from 1992 to 1995 inclusive are contained in the booklet State Grant Payments to Local Authorities for National, Non-National and Non-Public Accommodation Roads and own resources expenditure by Local Authorities on National and Non-National Roads in the period 1986-95 which is available in the Oireachtas Library. As South Dublin County Council was only established on 1 January 1994, the information for 1992 and 1993 relates to the former Dublin County Council area.

Details of the 1996 allocations to South Dublin County Council are contained in the booklet Non-National Road Grant Allocations, 1996 which is also available in the Oireachtas Library.

The selection of projects to be funded from discretionary maintenance and improvement grants is entirely a matter for the local authority concerned, subject only to general guidelines issued by my Department; details of such projects are not therefore available in my Department.

Under the former special road grants scheme and the EU co-financed grants scheme for specific improvement projects which commenced in 1994, the following non-national road projects have been funded:

1992:

Nangor Road/Boot Road

Nangor/Fox and Geese

1993:

Nangor Road/Boot Road

Nangor Road/Fox and Geese

Neilstown Road

1994:

Firhouse Road, Stage 3

Nangor/Fox and Geese, Stage 3

Robinhood/Turnpike Road,

Ballymount

1995:

Firhouse Road, Stage 3

Nangor/Fox and Geese, Stage 3

1996:

Firhouse Road, Stage 3

Nangor/Fox and Geese, Stage 3

Newlands/Fonthill (Newlands Cross- Boot Road)

Cookstown/Tallaght Town Centre.

With effect from 1 January 1994, the National Roads Authority was assigned responsibility for the allocation of grants in respect of national roads. However, details of national road grant payments from 1992 to 1995 (inclusive) are contained in the booklet State Grant Payments to Local Authorities on National, Non-National and Non-Public Accommodation Roads and own resources expenditure by Local Authorities on National and Non-National Roads in the period 1986-95, which is available in the Oireachtas Library. As South Dublin County Council was only established on 1 January 1994, the information for 1992 and 1993 relates to the former Dublin County Council area.

The selection of projects to be funded from maintenance grants is entirely a matter for the local authority concerned, subject only to general guidelines issues by my Department and now the NRA; details of such projects are not therefore available in my Department. In 1992 and 1993, specific road improvement grants were paid to Dublin County Council in respect of the following national roads located in the functional area of South Dublin County Council.

Southern Cross Route (part in South Dublin), Western Parkway, Tallaght By-Pass, Naas Road, Interchange.
