Vol. 466 No. 5

Written Answers. - Tallaght (Dublin) Task Force.

Eamon Walsh

Ceist:

128 Mr. E. Walsh asked the Minister for Enterprise and Employment if he will give details of the future plans for the workforce in Packard Electric, Tallaght, Dublin 24, in relation to the possible retraining programmes, alternative job placements and other support programmes that may be of assistance; the alternative industries, if any, in the pipeline for the Tallaght area; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [11809/96]

The Interim Report of the Tallaght Task Force was submitted to the Minister of State with responsibility for Commerce, Science and Technology on 30 May, 1996, and has been published. The recommendations of the interim report have been accepted by the Government and are being pursued as a matter of urgency. The recommendations are wide-ranging in content dealing with replacement industries, training-re-training and enterprise initatives to assist the workforce of Packard Electric, local suppliers and subcontractors, and support for the development of local SMEs. The task force report points out that over 500 job opportunities are actively being negotiated in the Tallaght area over the remainder of 1996.

The Deputy will also be aware of the recent jobs announcements in the area: GEA AG 100 jobs, Saturn (Solutions) Inc. 180 jobs and Discreet Logic 42 Jobs.
