Vol. 466 No. 5

Written Answers. - Transport Subsidies.

Noel Treacy

Ceist:

147 Mr. N. Treacy asked the Minister for Transport, Energy and Communications the amount of transport subsidies paid to Ireland since accession to the European Community on 1 January 1973, in respect of his Department, and the heads, subheads, Votes and Appropriations in Aid in relation thereto and also in respect of the agencies under the aegis of his Department; the contribution, if any, which these subsidies have made to the mobility of people; the effects, if any, they have had on services; the economic advantage of these subsidies; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [11845/96]

I regret to inform the Deputy it is not possible to provide the information sought by him, under the range of headings and for the number of years involved, in the time available. Furthermore I am advised that to compile the information required would be a particularly difficult task which would absorb a disproportionate amount of available resources. If the Deputy wishes to put down a more specific question, focused on particular areas of the transport sector, I will endeavour to ensure that the information he requires is made available.
