Written Answers. - National Health Bill.

Trevor Sargent

Ceist:

80 Mr. Sargent asked the Minister for Health the extent to which road accidents, road deaths and injuries contribute to the cost of the national health bill annually; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [11883/96]

Limerick East): A November 1995 report entitled “Accidental Injury in Ireland — Priorities for Prevention” produced by the Office for Health Gain, a body representative of the health board chief executive officers, estimated that when all costs are taken into account the health bill for injury, including road traffic accidents, in 1993, the year studied, exceeded £100 million — that is 5 per cent of the health budget for 1993.
