Adjournment Debate Matters.

I wish to advise the House of the following matters in respect of which notice has been given under Standing Order 20 and the name of the Member in each case: (1) Deputy Shortall — the problem of truck parking in residential areas; (2) Deputy Séan Ryan — the safety of plastic tanks for the storage of heating oil and the regulations, if any, for the installation of such tanks; (3) Deputy Flaherty — the urgent need for a classroom assistant for St. Patrick's national school, Drumcondra, Dublin 9; (4) Deputy Kirk — the introduction in the United States House of Representatives of a Bill, the purpose of which is to develop a trade agreement with Northern Ireland and the six Border counties in this State; (5) Deputy Briscoe — the need for special centres of detention for persons on remand; (6) Deputy Hogan — the need for the Minister for Education to intervene immediately to prevent the termination of third level courses organised by Carlow regional technical college at Seville Lodge, Kilkenny, with a view to continuing the availability of third level education in Kilkenny and the participation rate of local students in such courses; (7) Deputy Leonard — the alarming increase in the rate of unemployment in the Cavan/Monaghan constituency as indicated by recent live register figures; (8) Deputy Ned O'Keeffe — the progress made on science and technology issues in the light of the Travers task force; (9) Deputy Quill — the action, if any, being taken in relation to the fish kills in the River Martin, a tributary of the River Lee, on Thursday, 13 June 1996, where in excess of four thousand brown trout and young salmon were poisoned; the smaller fish kill on the Owenacurra River; and the action, if any, which has been taken to date in respect of the 74 fish kills which took place in 1995; (10) Deputy Martin — the need for the Minister for Education to intervene immediately to initiate discussions to prevent industrial action in primary schools due to the staffing schedule arrangements announced by the Minister for the 1996-97 school year; (11) Deputy Dempsey — the failure of the Minister for the Environment to publish the reports of the value for money unit of his Department notwithstanding that these reports have been requested since February 1995; (12) Deputy O'Hanlon — the need to ensure that business people who improve their premises are not penalised in view of the concern of many ratepayers in smaller towns whose rates are increased when they improve their shop fronts whereas if they move to a designated area in a larger town they receive tax relief; (13) Deputy Flood — the reported provision by the Southern Health Board of accommodation for five weeks for a 16 year-old Cork youth because no suitable place was available; (14) Deputy Morley — the commercial failure and possible closure of Swinford cattle mart, County Mayo, and the negative financial implications for many of its farming customers and other local traders; (15) Deputy McCreevy — the proposals, if any, which the Minister for Arts, Culture and the Gaeltacht has to settle the dispute between SIPTU and An Comhairle Ealaíon; (16) Deputy O'Leary — the urgent need for, and the intended size of, the allocation of EU grant aid by the Minister for Arts, Culture and the Gaeltacht towards the construction by the Scartaglen Rural Development Committee of a heritage and cultural centre at Scartaglen, County Kerry; (17) Deputy Keogh — the steps, if any, being taken by the Minister for Education to avert planned strikes in two primary schools tomorrow, 20 June, and further threatened strikes at primary level in autumn 1996; (18) Deputy Ó Cuív — an tábhacht atá ann go gceadófar deontas láithreach do Chumann Peile na bPiarsach i Ros Muc, Contae na Gaillimhe, le cabhair a thabhairt páirc pheile a fhorbairt ar an nGort Mór, Ros Muc.

The matters raised by Deputies McCreevy, Keogh, Kirk and Leonard have been selected for discussion.
