Vol. 467 No. 2

Written Answers. - Special Drug Unit.

Tony Gregory

Ceist:

16 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for Justice whether a special drug unit will be established in the Bridewell Garda Station, Dublin 7, in view of the threatening drug problem in the area and the mounting fears of residents. [12577/96]

I am informed by the Garda authorities that the DMA North Central Divisional Drugs Unit, which comprises gardaí from each district in the division, has specific responsibility for targeting drugs dealing in the area in question. In this task, the unit is actively supported by all gardaí in the division and additional resources are provided to the unit for particular operations.

The fight against drugs in the division involves the combined efforts of all gardaí in the division working closely with the Divisional Drugs Unit. The gardaí maintain close liaison with residents' groups, public representatives, the local authority and other State agencies in the fight against drugs and keep their response to the issue under constant review.

In all the circumstances setting up a special drugs unit specifically in the Bridewell is neither necessary nor appropriate.
