Vol. 467 No. 4

Written Answers. - National School Staffing.

Mary O'Rourke

Ceist:

172 Mrs. O'Rourke asked the Minister for Education if she will ensure that the current staff level be retained at St. Feichen's school, Fore, County Westmeath; if her attention has been drawn to the difficulties that will be experienced in this school if the current staffing arrangements are changed; and if she will further review and evaluate the matter in view of the documentary evidence which she has received. [13186/96]

The staffing of a national school for a particular year is determined by the enrolment of the school on 30 September of the previous year.

The enrolment of the school referred to by the Deputy on 30 September 1995 was 56 pupils. This enrolment warrants a staffing of a principal and one assistant teacher for the 1996-97 school year. Accordingly, the second assistant's post at the school will be suppressed at the end of the current school year. The teacher in question has been placed on the diocesan panel for redeployment which will not take place prior to 1 September 1996.

Difficulties relating to the provision of a remedial service at this school have been brought to my attention. Currently, the special education section of my Department is reviewing this matter. When a final decision has been made, the managerial authorities will be informed.
