Vol. 467 No. 4

Written Answers. - Student Support Schemes.

Liam Aylward

Ceist:

179 Mr. Aylward asked the Minister for Education the type of grants, both maintenance and fees, available to third-level students who are studying abroad; and when applications for these grants will be accepted by her Department. [13323/96]

The 1996 student support schemes provide for maintenance grants only to be paid to students pursuing third level studies in the 1996-97 academic year in other EU countries subject to compliance with the eligibility criteria set down in the schemes. Four levels of grant are payable as set out below depending on the income assessment and the distance from college.

Adjacent Rate

Full Maintenance

£1,600 (Category M1)

£637 (Category M2)

Part Maintenance (50%)

£800 (Category M3)

£319 (Category M4)

The non adjacent rate is payable to candidates whose parents reside more than 15 miles from the college being attended or, in the case of independent mature candidates, where the candidate themselves reside more than 15 miles from the college being attended.
Applications must be sent to the candidate's local authority or vocational education committee not later than 12 July.
