Vol. 467 No. 4

Written Answers. - Temporary Teacher Appointment.

Tony Gregory

Ceist:

194 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for Education if she will have arrangements made to authorise the employment of a temporary teacher to a school (details supplied) in Dublin 1 in view of the difficulties being experienced by this school in obtaining a teacher from the panel. [13488/96]

A vacancy has arisen for a permanent teacher in the school to which the deputy refers. The post must therefore be filled by a permanent teacher. Permanent posts can only be filled from relevant panels or, following the clearance of panels, by open competition.

Since the school in question is under the patronage of the Archbishop of Dublin, the vacancy must be filled from the Dublin Archdiocese panel. Currently, there is a number of teachers on this panel. A teacher on a panel cannot refuse any written offer of a vacancy unless he or she is currently serving in a school which is located more than 28 miles from the school in respect of which the offer is made, or unless the teacher has an exemption on the grounds of maternity.

A board of management with a fillable vacancy is required to make a written offer to a teacher and allow the teacher seven days to respond. I regret, therefore, that it is not possible for me to authorise the employment of a temporary teacher to the school in question.
