Vol. 467 No. 4

Written Answers. - Pupil-Teacher Ratios.

Donal Moynihan

Ceist:

199 Mr. Moynihan asked the Minister for Education if she will allocate corresponding pupil-teacher ratios to Gaeltacht national schools as that enjoyed by the Gaelscoileanna; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [13540/96]

Existing resources available to me do not permit the allocation to Gaeltacht schools of the same favourable pupil-teacher ratios applicable to Gaelscoileanna. In this context, the Deputy will be aware of the very many pressing and competing demands placed on limited resources. However, as the Deputy in no doubt aware, I am committed to reducing the pupil-teacher ratio in mainstream primary schools generally. Since I came into office, I have reduced the pupil-teacher ratio from 25.2:1 to 22.9:1 in the current school year.
