Vol. 467 No. 4

Written Answers. - Garda Deployment.

Liz O'Donnell

Ceist:

214 Ms O'Donnell asked the Minister for Justice the number of community gardaí deployed in the Templeville and Fortfield district of Templeogue, Dublin 6; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [13395/96]

The allocation of Garda personnel is the responsibility of the Garda authorities.

They have informed me that the Templeville and Fortfield area of Templeogue is policed by the gardaí attached to Terenure Garda Station. There is one garda employed on community policing in the area. In addition, there are regular foot and mobile patrols, both uniform and plain clothes, of the area.

There is as yet no neighbourhood watch scheme operating in the Templeville-Fortfield area. However, the Garda authorities have informed me that in December 1995 the community garda responsible for the area, together with an inspector from Rathmines station, met residents from both Fortfield and Templeville and outlined the benefits and operation of such a scheme. I understand from the Garda authorities that, apart from a small minority of residents, there has been a poor response to date to the suggestion of implementing a neighbourhood watch scheme in the area.
