Vol. 467 No. 4

Written Answers. - Effects of Economic and Monetary Union.

Tony Killeen

Ceist:

242 Mr. Killeen asked the Minister for Tourism and Trade the research, if any, that has been undertaken by his Department into the likely effect of economic and monetary union on Irish exports. [13564/96]

The Minister for Finance has commissioned the ESRI to carry out a major study on the economic implications of economic and monetary union in Ireland. In addition to being represented on the steering committee overseeing this project, my Department and agencies operating under its aegis have also been working fully with and facilitating the ESRI exercise.

I understand that the study is in its final phase and I hope to see its findings emerge in the coming months. The study will be a key reference point for an evolving Government strategy to prepare for participation in economic and monetary union.
