Vol. 467 No. 4

Written Answers. - Non-EU Nationals' Work Permits.

Eric J. Byrne

Ceist:

282 Mr. E. Byrne asked the Minister for Enterprise and Employment whether he has considered the report of the Interdepartmental Committee on Non-Nationals with regard to the granting of work permits for non-EU nationals; the plans, if any, he has to amend the relevant regulations; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [13644/96]

The Interdepartmental Committee on Non-Nationals was established by the Government in 1993 to examine all matters relating to non-nationals in the State. It comprised senior officials from the Departments of Justice, Foreign Affairs and my Department. The committee's first report, which was submitted to Government in November 1993, dealt with asylum seekers and refugees and the second report deals with matters relating to admission and residence in the State.

The second report has not yet been submitted to Government. Therefore I am not in a position to comment on its contents.

However, the subject of work permit policy is under review in my Department. Any submission from the Deputy regarding this matter will be very welcome.
