Ceist:

307 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Transport, Energy and Communications if his attention has been drawn to the fact that some people who promote and advertise student accommodation and travel abroad are not listed on the travel agents' list; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [13508/96]

The Transport (Tour Operator and Travel Agents) Act, 1982, provides that persons shall not carry on the business of travel agent or hold themselves out, by advertisement or otherwise, as carrying on such a business unless they are the holder of a licence under the Act. The Act further provides that any person who carries on business in contravention of the Act is liable on conviction to penalties specified in the Act.
My Department investigates instances of suspected unlicensed trading which come to its attention or in respect of which complaints are received. My Department is not currently investigating any unauthorised activity in the area of student accommodation and travel abroad as referred to in the Deputy's question. However, if the Deputy wishes to bring any specific matter to my Department's attention in this regard, I can assure him that it will be investigated.
