Vol. 467 No. 4

Written Answers. - Tourist Information Offices.

Michael Ahern

Ceist:

35 Mr. M. Ahern asked the Minister for Tourism and Trade the plans, if any, he has to use the An Post network to provide additional tourist information services. [13330/96]

The regional tourism organisations were established in 1963 by Bord Fáilte under section 5 of the 1952 Tourist Traffic Act with the primary role of servicing tourists in Ireland. This function was fulfilled through the creation of a network of tourist information offices on a regional basis.

The regional tourism organisations and Shannon Development will operate a network of 88 tourist information offices in 1996. These tourist offices are supplemented by serviced tourist information points in approximately 100 other locations where visitor demand is significant.

I understand from Bord Fáilte that there are no plans at present to use An Post network to provide additional tourist information services.
