Vol. 467 No. 4

Written Answers. - Promotion of Tourism from Northern Ireland.

Desmond J. O'Malley

Ceist:

48 Mr. O'Malley asked the Minister for Tourism and Trade the steps, if any, being taken to encourage a greater number of tourists from Northern Ireland; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [13426/96]

Overall responsibility for the promotion of tourism from Northern Ireland rests with Bord Fáilte.

I am advised by Bord Fáilte that it manages a marketing programme for Northern Ireland with television, radio and press advertising, a full publicity programme and a series of trade and consumer promotions in partnership with the Irish trade. In the autumn, a specific advertising and publicity programme will take place to encourage the development of the market with an emphasis on off-season growth.
Overall, tourism from Northern Ireland has grown steadily in the past few years. In 1995 the market was worth £80.6 million to the Irish economy which represents an increase of 16 per cent over the 1993 performance.
