Vol. 467 No. 4

Written Answers. - Childhood Vaccination Scheme.

Máire Geoghegan-Quinn

Ceist:

92 Mrs. Geoghegan-Quinn asked the Minister for Health the plans, if any, he has to include the new acellular pertussis vaccine into the childhood vaccination scheme in view of the findings of the National Immunisation Committee that acellular pertussis vaccines have shown absolute efficacy and are also associated with fewer and milder adverse reactions; and his views on whether its use would help overcome historical controversial difficulties with the immunisation programmes. [13295/96]

Limerick East): Pertussis immunisation is administered combined with diphtheria and tetanus and is commonly known as DPT or 3 in 1. The Irish Medicines Board is currently assessing a product authorisation application for a DPT vaccine which contains a cellular pertussis. The question of including this vaccine in the primary childhood immunisation scheme will be considered if and when a product authorisation is issued by the Irish Medicines Board and decided on the basis of information provided by the board and other epidemiological and scientific evidence produced.
