Vol. 467 No. 4

Written Answers. - Medical Equipment on Aer Lingus Aeroplanes.

Tom Kitt

Ceist:

107 Mr. T. Kitt asked the Minister for Health the plans, if any, he has to provide defibrillators, portable electric shock machines, on Aer Lingus planes for use in emergencies. [13491/96]

Limerick East): The question of the level of medical equipment to be carried on Aer Lingus aeroplanes is a matter for that company to decide. The Irish Heart Foundation, assisted by my Department, is engaged in a national campaign to educate the public to recognise the symptoms of cardiac arrest and the administration of cardio pulmonary resuscitation. The next link in the chain of survival involves defibrillation and while first responder defibrillation does not necessarily have to be administered by a health professional proper training is essential. Any organisation involved in training for defibrillation techniques should contact the National Ambulance Advisory Council who would supply details of the appropriate training bodies.
