Vol. 467 No. 5

Written Answers. - Report on Urban Crime and Disorder.

Brian Lenihan

Ceist:

93 Mr. Lenihan asked the Minister for Justice the progress, if any, made on the implementation of the report of the Interdepartmental Group on Urban Crime and Disorder; whether she has established a review procedure for implementation of the report; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [13716/96]

Implementation of the recommendations in the report involves several Government Departments, and State agencies, as a consequence of the broadly base approach to the problem of urban crime and disorder which was adopted by the inter-departmental group. Significant progress has been made in implementing the group's recommendations with a number of important recommendations already implemented by Departments and agencies, including my own Department.

I am concerned that certain other recommendations contained in the report be progressed as soon as is feasible. However, these are spread across several Departments and agencies and implementation is dependent on the financial resources available to and priorities of those particular bodies. Progress on these recommendations is being kept under constant review in my Department.
