Vol. 468 No. 1

Written Answers. - Facilities for Disabled.

Mary Wallace

Ceist:

133 Miss M. Wallace asked the Minister for Education the efforts, if any, he is making to ensure that all people with disabilities have access to recreational facilities; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [14617/96]

The capital schemes administered by my Department for the provision of sports facilities include a requirement that the facilities in receipt of grant-in-aid be available to the community. The Code of Practice for Safety at Sports Grounds published by my Department earlier this year includes a chapter devoted specifically to the provision of safe accommodation of people with disabilities at these venues.

In addition, the Building Regulations 1991, under the Department of the Environment, place a clear duty on those providing or reconstruction buildings to cater for the needs of disabled people, the provision of access for disabled people to existing buildings to which the public have access is a matter for the owners or occupiers of the buildings concerned.
