Vol. 468 No. 1

Written Answers. - Curragh (Kildare) Ammunition Depot.

Ivor Callely

Ceist:

161 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Justice whether the ammunition deport located in the Curragh Army Barracks, County Kildare, is a matter of concern; whether the barracks is to be used as a prison; whether the issue has been considered; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [14525/96]

The possible implications arising from the existence of the ammunition depot at the Curragh complex were fully considered before the decision to convert military detention barracks for use as a civil prison was taken.

I am satisfied that the ammunition depot does not pose a significant risk to the safety of prisoners or staff at the proposed new prison. I am aware that the ammunition depot is operated to the most stringent standards of safety and security and I am particularly conscious of the excellent long-term safety record at the depot. Furthermore, it should be noted that a significant portion of the Curragh military complex, including military staff residential units and, indeed, some private commercial and residential properties are also in the vicinity of the depot. Finally, it should be pointed out that civilian prisoners were previously accommodated in the detention barracks as were military detainees immediately prior to the transfer of the detention barracks to the Department of Justice.
