168 Mr. B. Ahern asked the Minister for Justice the number of affiliated and non-affiliated paramilitary prisoners in jail in this State on 31 August 1994; the number and dates on which many of them have since been released; and the number currently in jail. [14603/96]

On the 31 August 1994 a total of 84 affiliated and non-affiliated paramilitary prisoners were in custody. The figure for the 28 June 1996 was 53. Set out below is a schedule of the releases granted under the early release programme arising from the Provisional IRA ceasefire of 31 August 1994.

Bertie Ahern

Ceist:

169 Mr. B. Ahern asked the Minister for Justice whether affiliated or non-affiliated paramilitary prisoners are currently being granted parole for family or humanitarian reasons; and whether there has been any change of policy since 9 February 1996. [14604/96]

The full restoration of the parole arrangements which existed immediately prior to the resumption of violence on 9 February last is something which will fall to be considered in the event of the ceasefire being restored.

In the meantime, the position is that each parole application is considered on its merits.
